Series: Broken Banknote
NOTES & DETAILS
A third attempt on a single panel, this overpainting of an existing work encapsulates the downfall of the post-Glasnost Soviet Union. Layered over Sergei Mavrodi’s Ponzi scheme bank certificates—sold to Russians in the 1990s as a supposed escape from the failed ruble—the work, like its predecessors, underscores the cyclical nature of economic instability and the political failures that perpetuate it.
This painting was selected to its first show submittal, and was fortunate enough to be the catalog cover for the POP! Art with Mass Appeal, at Annmarie Sculpture Garden and Arts Center in Maryland.
