Cuba’s convertible peso promised a currency as good as the dollar. Tourists spent it. Most Cubans were never paid in it. In 2021, it was gone. What remains is a pale, beautiful absence: Che emptied out, Cuba dropped from its own central bank, and a space in the middle, like a seat no one came back for.
